Complicated.......

Group meeting at 7:15 am led by Reid Callanan, the Director of Santa Fe Workshops, and Kip Brundage to discuss the logistics of flying to Cuba. The message was: “it’s complicated.” Things in Cuba are unpredictable and always changing. Nothing stays the same. Everything is in a constant state of flux. So we’ll just have to go with the flow.

Charter flight took only 45 minutes. Customs was a breeze. Luckily, I changed some money at the airport, which was a good b/c our rooms weren’t ready and we were able to have some lunch in the lobby while we waited. Thanks Linda for the tip to change money at the airport!

Our hotel, Hotel Parque Central in Old Havana is very nice. We have a great view of the bustling street below where they just happen to be filming a movie with old Chevy cars circling a roundabout below. Every now and then some “extras” run through the “set.” We also have a great view of the rooftop terraces across the way. Lisa and I explored our neighborhood and hotel.

Welcome dinner and orientation meeting at a local restaurant nearby called CafĂ© del Oriente. They served fillet of beef drizzled with chocolate sauce, and chicken with a blue cheese sauce. Dessert was sweet potato mouse with garlic, and a heavy flan. Unique. We met the Cuban photographers from Fototeca that we’ll be working with. Strolled along the Prado, a tree-lined pedestrian walkway, after dinner. The weather was cool and lovely.
