This morning we took a walking tour of the Ancient Town of
Hoi An. First we checked out the local market. Then we went to Phuoc Kien Hoi
Quan, a pagoda built in 1902 by the Chinese. It had elaborate brass ritual
objects and fine woodcarvings on the altars, walls and lanterns. Next we went
to Hoa Van Le Nghia, the oldest assembly hall in Hoi An and home of Chinese
immigrants. Then we visited Bao Tang Van Hoa Dan Gian, a folklore museum, and finally
an ancestral family home. We crossed the Chua Cau or Japanese bridge to our
lunch spot, where we waited a long time to be served. For dinner we went to the
Secret Garden, where a chef demonstrated the art of preparing beautiful
Vietnamese foods and showed us how to cook our own meal. We had a lot of laughs
and good food.
